Swedish Massage

Swedish Massage is probably what most people think of when they think about a massage.  It consists of 5 massage strokes: Effleurage, Petrissage, Tapotement, Friction, and Vibration. Each one with a specific function and purpose. Swedish Massage has been show to help reduce muscle pain, and joint stiffness, reduce stress, and improve mood.

Effleurage - This is a 'light' stroke used to relax and prepair the body for the rest of the massage. It's important to warm up the muscles before deeper tissues are worked to avoid pain and discomort. Effleurage is also used to promote blood flow, and lymphatic system health.

Petrissage - These massage strokes are performed using the palm of the hand in conjunction with the fingertips, and thumb. It can include slow, deep, rhythmic kneading using the palms or the knuckles as well as other techniques such as skin rolling, wringing, and squeezing. This helps to remove toxins from the muscles, including lactic acid, increase circulation, and improve muscle tone. The lymph system also benefits for the squeezing and kneading motions.

Tapotement - This 'rhythmic tapping' is used to stimulate the skin, and muscle reflexes. It includes: Cupping - Cupping is preformed by making a cup shape with the hands and striking the body with gentle to moderate force. It is helpful in clearing lung congestion. Hacking - This movement uses the sides of the palms to work the muscles. Vibration - This rapid movement produces a trembling effect, and helps relax the tissue. Pummeling - The body is worked rapidly using fists, and moderate force.

Friction - Using a deep circular or back and forth motions the tissues are worked with the palms, fingers, and hands. These deep strokes relieve sore, tired muscles, and help to further eliminate toxins. The motions also stretch, and lengthen tissue to increase flexibility, and range of motion.

Vibration - This technique releases tension by gently shaking and vibrating the muscle with the hand or fingertips. It's stimulating, invigorating, and balances out the massage.
